The Shadyside Handbook was proposed at the direction of Department of Medicine Chief Dr. Amanda Lenhard. A handbook should do more than collect information: it should provide an immediate way to communicate, find relevant knowledge, build community, and advance shared goals.
We are living in unprecedented times, as institutions become increasingly cephalized—developing something like a shared nervous system through which their people, knowledge, and emerging intelligence can connect. This handbook hopes to serve as one small interface to that system: a communicator you can use not only to talk with the institution’s nascent intelligence, but ultimately to help teach it, improve it, and shape what it becomes.
